It is often necessary to add separating lines when creating a layout. They can be of different types but all of them have one function: to separate one block of information from another. In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to create an unusual separating Line.

Open Photoshop and create a new document with a 400×200 px size and the background color #5a5a5a.

Create a new layer and make a selection in the middle of the canvas, size 250×300px.

Separator Line: selection

Fill in the selection black. Next, create a new layer and move the selection for 1 px down. Fill it with white and deselect.

Separator Line: black white

We now have the simplest separating line. But we will do more. Apply the Blending Mode to both layers with Soft Light lines.

Separator Line: soft light

Create a new layer, and make the selection with a 300×25px size above the line.

Separator Line: upper selection

Choose the Linear Gradient tool (Foreground to Transparent) with the following settings:

Separator Line: gradient

Make the Foreground color white, and run several gradients bottom-up, beginning to draw from below and beyond the bounds of the selection and finishing in various parts of the selection. After that, Deselect. Now the upper part of the separating line is ready.

Separator Line: upper gradient

Next create a new layer and make the selection similarly to the previous step, but this time do it under the line. Set the Foreground color as black and run several gradients top-down with the same settings as in previous step. Don’t forget to deselect.

Separator Line: lower gradient

Now select all the layers with the lines and gradients and merge them into one. Select an area with 300×62px size (over the line’s full length and gradients’ width).

Separator Line: separator selection

Invert the selection and apply the Feather with a parameter of 13px. Click Del several times and Deselect. That’s it, enjoy this unique separating line.

Step 1. First start by making a new document, if you plan on making this for print, you’ll want to use a high DPI and size. I just used the default DPI/Resolution and a size of “400 x 200″ pixels.

Fill the background with a “#F12412″ to “#8C0900″ Radial Gradient.

image 1

Step 2. Get the Custom Shape Tool out then find the “Heart Card” shape.

image 2

Change your Foreground color to white (#FFFFFF) then on a new layer make a bunch of random-sized hearts.

Note: Hold shift to make the shape perfect.

image 3

Right-click the hearts layer and go into the Blending Options, use the following options/settings:

image 4

image 5

Your hearts should look like this now:

image 6

Step 3. Now we need to add our text. First of all get the Horizontal Type Tool (the regular one) and write out your text in white.

image 7

The font I used above is called ‘More Enchanted Prairie Dog’, you can download it here from DaFont.

Go into the Blending Options for your text layer and apply the following options/settings:

image 8

image 9

Not much difference, but it gives it a bit of a nicer feel:

image 10

Now if you want you can add some post-effects to the image. Other than that, you’re done.

I found this funny. Few days ago, I receive a mail from my friend. It is about the art of paper. I bet you see this before but that is real photo. However, I think over and figure it out. Now, I am going to create the paper cut art with Photoshop.

1. Open a document with 400 X 350 px, RGB, 72 DPI with white background. Immediately, create a new layer and rename it as paper. Apply this setting:

Gradient Overlay
Blend mode: normal
Gradient from #69bbd3 (location = 65%) to white, reverse.
Angle = 90°

image 1

2. With the custom shape, choose a desire shape and draw with holding shift with white color. You can download my custom shape here. Apply the following setting for the shape:

Gradient Overlay
Blend mode: normal
Gradient from Black to white
Angle = 90°

Drop Shadow
Blend mode: multiply
Opacity: 15%
Distance: 1px
Size: 0px
Uncheck global light, Angle = -155°

image 2

3. Ctrl + J to duplicate the shape and right click on the copy shape and clear the layer style. Change the shape color to black for easy modification. Ctrl + T to enable the transform. Right click and select distort. Drag the top middle point as shown.

image 3

image 4

4. After confirm the transform. Ctrl + Left Click on the layer to bring out the selection. Select paper layer and press del.

image 5

5. Create a new layer and rename as inner. Draw as shown with the rectangle marquee tool. Drag a black to transparent gradient. Ctrl + Left Click on shape layer and select inner layer, click the add mask layer at the bottom of the layer palette.

image 6

6. Ctrl + J to duplicate shape layer again and change the color to black. Ctrl + T to transform. Select distort too and drag as shown.

image 7

7. Rasterize the transform shape and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur > 3px. Set the opacity to 25%. Put it below shape layer. Open the wood picture and place it below paper layer.
